 |
|
At the moment I am running into a problem with my PVR (Computer for watching tv shows, like a TiVo)...
I have my PVR set up and running tv shows and what not. What I would like to be able to do is VNC into the computer on a virtual second monitor. Like if my girlfriend, or my brother, or his girlfriend are watching tv, then I can VNC into the computer on a virtual second monitor and work on stuff without interrupting the tv show/movie.
Anybody have any ideas? _________________ --Infra

I don't know how virtual PC or VNC works so I would go with setting up a regular dual screen setup, for this solution more information is needed.
Does your video card support dual screens? What output types?
What display will be used for work and what display will be use for PVR?
What are the input options for each display and how many inputs?
Where is each display situated?
Where is the computer situated?
Not sure if this is even an option, but I will try to help! |

I don't have a second display. What I want to do is fool windows into thinking there *is* a second display. After which I can VNC (remote connect) to the "second display" while still be able to have the tv shows/movies and such displayed on the main screen (the only actual display connected to the computer) _________________ --Infra

But in reality, the second display is your mobile laptop (I assume), although you will be connected to the second display via wireless network (another assumption).
Why do you have to do work on the PVR system? Why not use just use your laptop instead?
Sounds like way more trouble than it's worth. Whatever it is you are trying to accomplish, there probably is an easier solution.
Even if you did set it up, if someone is watching any high resolution video while you start working on the same system, you are probably going to cap out the bandwidth on the hard drive or bus and impact the quality of viewing.
Probably not what you want to hear, but it just doesn't quite make sense from a functional point of view. |

I think I misread your initial post, Ryan.
I am not sure you can do what it is you want to do without having an actual 2nd monitor. While Virtual PC can set up a 'copy' of your computer, you will still need a 2nd physical output.
What about using a TV instead?
KVM switches work too, but that is mostly so you can share 1 monitor between multiple PC's.

I use the pvr for bit-torrent downloads as well. So when I'm disrupting the tv-show, people get agitated...I do use my laptop for a lot of work and stuff.
Anyway, I think it's possible, because they have virtual display drivers that do show up as monitors in the windows display properties. What I don't know is where to find one, and then be able to vnc into that monitor specifically... _________________ --Infra

found the driver that I'm looking for:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ultravnc/UltraVnc-DriverSetupSilent.zip?download
Now I just need to figure out how to VNC into a specific monitor...I'm able to extend the display with the virtual device and vnc in, but the main display is still inside the vnc window...
*edit* which I guess isn't so bad...I'm not disrupting the tv shows anymore, which is nice... _________________ --Infra

You might be able to assign a port to each monitor; good luck with that one though. Only way I can see doing it. o_O _________________ I'm not on drugs, I'm in [CI].™
